Recognized as “el major mariachi del mundo”, Mariachi Vargas is sure to deliver a memorable performance this Friday at Hill Auditorium. Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán has a rich history that spans over five generations. And, with songs that are cross generational, their performances appeal to young and mature audiences alike. Who are you taking to see Mariachi Vargas? Is mariachi music new to you?

Thanks UMS! Last Sunday I was looking for MV's 2010/2011 schedule, assuming I'd schedule a trip to Guadalajara, Guanajuato or elsewhere around their itinerary. And to my HUGE surprise I saw Friday's scheduled performance just 5 days away and a mere 251 miles or 4 hour drive from my home in Chicago! I went.
This Gringo had a wonderful evening! Twenty years ago I lived briefly in Mexico and fell in love with the food and music. In Chicago I'm surrounded by the food and other elements of the culture but to get a real dose of Mariachi at that highest level means to go to the source — Mariachi Vargas.
What an amazing collection of talent! Among the 13 musicians, I guess there are now 8 vocalists?! Not noted is a third trumpeter who also sings, a rich voice, very much worthy of more solos.
I hope someone noted and can share the playlist from Friday's show!
Thanks MV for sharing the music and your talents!

I am so glad you were able to join us for the concert this past Friday. We certainly enjoyed having the Mariachi Vargas in our community for a few days and will get the playlist posted in the next day or so.

For those of you who have asked, we have a partial playlist for the Mariachi Vargas concert last Friday evening. According to Cynthia Munoz, producer of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza, Jose "Pepe" Martinez, Sr. writes a list of songs on a napkin prior to the concert which he will change during the concert based on the audience's response.
The pieces listed here were on the list and played during the concert:
-RANCHO GRANDE
-POR AMOR
-VIOLIN HUAP. #2
-RANCHERO: HAY UNOS OJOS / CUANDO SALGO A LOS CAMPOS / CRUZ DE OLVIDO / EL SOLDADO DE LEVITA.
-LOS GRANDES: PEPE GUIZAR, JOSE ALFREDO, CONSUELO VELAZQUEZ, RUBEN FUENTES.
-REVOLUCIONARIO: SOLDADO DE VILLA/ LOS DORADOS DE VILLA/ ADIOS DEL SOLDADO/ LA VALENTINA/ LA ADELITA/ VIVA MEXICO.
- HERMOSO CARINO
-VAQUEROS: CANCION VAQUERA / HUAPANGO TORERO / TORO VIEJO / EL AGUACERO / TORO RELAJO.
-POR TI VOLARE.

I'm pretty sure I also remember:
- Malaguena Sale Rosa
- Por Una Amor
- El Pastor
- Cielito Lindo Son Juasteco
- Mexico Lindo y Quierido (or am I imaging this?)
- El Rey (with a couple other Jose Alfredo Jimenez songs)
- Ay Jalisco (or also imagined?)
I wonder if anyone knows the song that I think Daniel and Steven sang nearer the end, together in parallel harmony — starts real real softly, slow, moody, indulgent?!

I feel like a Mariachi Vargas troopy. We saw them for the first time at the Millenium Park in Chicago last summer and we were amazed to hear them play and sing with the Chicago symphony Orchestra. When we found out they were back at Chicago again at the Hall, we went back there and also enjoyed their increidible show, then Detroit and we are looking to see if we can make the trip to San Antonio,Texas and view and listen to all that Mariachi extravaganza. They are really a whole group of talented musicians !!

Thank you so much for the lists! I wanted to find some of these songs after the concert but sadly I didn't know the names of all of them. Thank you again!
