People Are Talking: UMS presents Handel’s Messiah at Hill Auditorium:

  • Was told by another patron while waiting to be seated that there were 2 large tours in attendance. I can only assume they thought there would be another intermission after Part II, so they could leave without making a scene. It was pretty dreadful. What say you, UMS?

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Darius Milhaud’s Oresteia of Aeschelys at Hill Auditorium:

  • One of the greatest spectacles ever at Hill, put on by U of M students! A massive trilogy performed with such enthusiasm by musicians in the prime of their youth, with all the feelings that implies. Act III of part 3, in particular, was unbelievable: a play so dense and difficult was brought to life by Milhaud, and the final paeon at the ending was a musical highlight of my life. Can hardly wait for the recording. Kudos to all concerned!

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents Martha Graham Dance Company at Power Center:

  • I saw Appalachian Spring in the 70’s at the Kennedy Center, including a young Janet Eilber, I believe. Martha was behind stage and came out for a bow. Now, over 30 years later, I continue to be floored by the perfect synergy of music, dance and sculpture (what else can you call the spare but perfect Noguchi set?) This artwork is truly an American treasure, so bravo to the company for keeping it alive!
PS I thought the taped music might be Copland conducting, and was later told it was. How fitting!

  • People Are Talking: UMS presents The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra: From the Canyons to the Stars:

  • Pianist was fabulous. The music was awesome. However, my companion closed his eyes so as not to be distracted by video. It was sort of like watching a silent horror/surrealist/abstract expressionist movie, leaving me in constant state of dread and foreboding. Certainly did not go well with the music. Perhaps a new genre has been created: “distract expressionism?”
